Therme Group
Forest Bathing Research

Therme Group sought to create an immersive experience that could connect visitors with nature while promoting deep relaxation and emotional well-being. Their goal was to design an innovative experience that would combine biophilic elements with cutting-edge technology to reduce stress and enhance overall mental and physical wellness. This experience, called Lupuna, was inspired by the lush Amazon rainforest and aimed to offer visitors a truly transformative wellness journey.

We conducted a comprehensive study in our Research Lab to measure the effectiveness of
Lupuna on participants; stress levels, emotional well-being, and overall sense of connection with
nature. A sample of 23 participants took part in the immersive forest bathing experience, which
included two phases: one with an introductory rainforest soundscape and another with a 20-
minute immersive audiovisual experience centered around the Lupuna tree. The study
combined biological measures (heart rate, heart rate variability, EEG, GSR, cortisol, oxygen
saturation) and self-report questionnaires to assess participants’ physiological and emotional
responses both before and after the experience.

The study revealed significant findings that highlight the effectiveness of Lupuna in promoting
relaxation and emotional well-being:
- Relaxation and Stress Recovery: 100% of participants showed a decrease in heart
rate, indicating a strong relaxation response. Additionally, 69.6% of participants
demonstrated increased heart rate variability (HRV), suggesting enhanced stress
recovery and emotional regulation. - Mental Clarity and Tranquility: There was a significant increase in frontal delta and
posterior theta brain activity (82.4% and 95%, respectively), both of which are
associated with deep relaxation and meditative states. - Reduced Anxiety: 81.8% of participants reported a decrease in anxiety after the
experience, demonstrating the calming effect of the immersive environment. - Connection to Nature: 42.9% of participants felt a greater connection to nature, a
sense that is linked to improvements in mental health, reduced anxiety, and a deeper
appreciation for the environment. - Emotional Well-Being: Participants exhibited more balanced emotional states, with
reduced levels of both positive and negative emotions, indicating enhanced emotional
regulation.
