The Challenge

In today’s hyperconnected world, sleep has become one of our most disrupted biological processes—despite being one of the most essential. Equinox Hotels, a brand built on performance living, set out to address the global sleep crisis with a hospitality-first approach. They envisioned a new gold standard for restorative rest—one that went far beyond blackout blinds and plush mattresses.

The challenge: how do you design a room that doesn’t just feel luxurious, but actively helps guests sleep better? How can sensory rituals replace reactive tools with proactive wellness, all within the sanctuary of a hotel room?

The Solution

To meet this challenge, Equinox Hotels partnered with White Mirror to run a speculative design sprint as part of a live Sleep Lab study for a suite of in-room sensory rituals rooted in circadian science and sensorial precision. In collaboration with renowned neuroscientist and sleep expert, Dr. Matthew Walker, we developed a multi-sensory sleep journey that aligns with guests’ natural rhythms.

The Sleep Ritual Suite includes:

  • Guided breathwork experiences, visually enhanced by warm-spectrum red and orange light—shown to be the least disruptive to melatonin production.

  • Audio-visual content that primes the nervous system for down-regulation, using slow tempos and rhythmic entrainment.

  • A Wakescape: a gentle, audio-driven ritual designed to replace harsh alarms with gradual sensory stimulation—awakening guests softly and restoring their energy naturally.

All interventions were engineered for ease of use, seamlessly integrated into the room environment to promote better sleep hygiene and enhance recovery.

The Outcome

Initial feedback from guests and stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive. Early data suggests improvements in perceived sleep quality, reduced nighttime awakenings, and smoother wake-up experiences. Users described feeling “rested, balanced, and alert”—a direct reflection of the performance living ethos Equinox is known for.

By combining cutting-edge sleep science with design-forward sensory storytelling, White Mirror helped Equinox Hotels redefine what a luxury sleep experience can be: not just beautiful, but biologically supportive. This collaboration is a bold step forward in hospitality wellness—and a signal to the industry that sleep is the next frontier in guest experience.
